Some folks think Martha’s Vineyard rolls up its streets and byways some time after Columbus Day. The stores and restaurants batten down their hatches until Spring shines its vernal light on the island.

To paraphrase Carnac the Magnificent, “Wrong again, barnacle breath!”

The Vineyard is a special place. Time has no bearing on that fact. There is no reason not to enjoy its varied graces in January as well as July. In many ways, it’s better in the off-season. When the Byrd’s sang in “Turn, Turn, Turn” about a “time of peace” in the 60’s (or when Pete Seeger wrote the song in the 50’s or when Solomon wrote the original words in the… way long time ago) they might have been (but weren’t) talking about MV in Winter. There is a still to soothe the soul and a calm to rejuvenate the body.

Plus, there are ample parking spaces at Sharky’s.

Since eating is a favorite activity on the island, let’s consider our options for eateries in the lower season.

At the aforementioned Sharky’s in Oak Bluffs or Edgartown, it’s Cinco de Mayo every day, no matter the season. If you are among the unfortunate ones who have never visited our south of the border friends, there’s already a whole post on it here: https://www.vineyardsquarehotel.com/2010/08/marthas-vineyard-has-greatest-place-to-eat-in-the-whole-wide-world/

The Wharf Pub in Edgartown is also a year-round hangout. It’s been there since, oh, about forever. Rumor has it that Thomas Mayhew (1593-1682) used to attend their Trivia Nights. (No one beat him in the history category.) It’s a family place with good food at good prices.

Espresso Love deserves its own post and will likely get one. Virtually everyone within 10 miles stops there for their morning java fix, regardless of the month. Beyond the beans, their sandwiches and pastries keep me coming back.

A new restaurant on Water street – a stone throw from the hotel – is making waves as a high-end joint that’s open year-round. 11 North features fare from chef Matt Stogryn. Stogryn has has created gastronomic happiness all over the country at Elisabeth Daniel in San Francisco, Tremont 647 in Boston, and on the Island at The Sweet Life Café in Oak Bluffs. Dishes feature a combination of organic meats and local veggies for a nicely varied menu that includes burgers, tuna tartare, and whole poussin.

For cold-weather ambiance, it’s hard to beat The Newes from America on a brisk night. Besides having one of the coolest names ever, this place seems to generate its own warmth. From the dark wood furnishings, to the fieldstone wall, to the etched glass, the place feels as warm and inviting as the British pubs it emulates. A massive and ever-changing selection of brews simply completes the picture. The fact that it’s only a few dozen steps from Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites makes it the perfect place to stroll to, no matter what Old Man Winter throws our way.

The only things missing in the off-season are the ice cream shops. For some reason, they all close down for the winter. You’ll just have to settle for a pint of Ben & Jerry’s from Cronig’s. You’ll survive.

There are, in fact, lots of restaurants open year-round on the Vineyard, but there’s more to do than just eat. Look for my post next month for some ideas.

Christmas in Edgartown was tons of fun this year at our Martha’s Vineyard hotel! Held this past weekend (Dec 7-9), Christmas in Edgartown was a town-wide celebration of the holidays full of joy and good cheer.

Wes and Joanne elve it up at the 2012 Christmas in Edgartown event.

Lots of folks came to party at The Square. Our artisan trunk show (featuring the lovely wares of Libby Ellis and Rebeccah J.) was really successful, the pizza oven was cranking all day, Chescas sold sauces and truffles and everyone had a blast dancing to the groovy jams of Family Dance-O-Rama.

DJ Mona even stayed an extra 2 hours as everyone was having such a good time.

Our General Manager, Joanne, and Assistant Manager, Wes, were the Elves (as you can see by the photo at right) — ensuring giggles from visitors young and old!

Thanks to all our wonderful guests who stayed with us for this magical holiday weekend, and thanks to the locals for dropping by and sharing the spirit of the season.

Restaurants tend to be ephemeral things, even on the bastion of tradition that is Martha’s Vineyard. One day they’re here, the next day you’re wondering, “What happened to my favorite salmon dish?” At this time of year when we bid farewell to the bustling season and welcome in the quiet season, let us consider long lost culinary friends and usher in new Vineyard foodie destinations. Who knows what the coming new year will bring?

First, Ghosts of Restaurants Past.

Once there was The Navigator in Edgartown. The food was acceptable, the ambiance enjoyable, and the view incomparable, situated as it was literally on the water. It’s hard to get too wistful about the loss because its replacement, The Atlantic Fish & Chop House is an improvement on almost all counts. Except the view. It’s still merely incomparable.

The most mercurial of all establishments was Lola’s of Oak Bluffs. I have a particular fondness for their unique spin on Cajun cuisine. The variety of pre-meal breads was fabulous and their Cajun angel hair onion rings are the stuff of Legend. I’ve never tasted their equal before or since. One season, Lola’s just disappeared, onion rings and all.

The next season, the Mediterranean, a highly touted Italian eatery originally in Vineyard Haven, was in Lola’s Beach Road location. If you blinked you missed them, however, because Lola’s was back the next season. They didn’t last as long as a plate of their onion rings in that second incarnation. Hooked (“An Island Fish House”) is there now. If that site’s track record is any indication, you might want to visit soon.

Edgartown saw Water become Atria and Dunes morph into Lure. The Tuscany Inn was replaced by the relocated l’etoile. And that’s just a small sampling.

(In a hazy dream, I vaguely recall a Subway somewhere on the island. Maybe it was just a nightmare. In any case, it’s not around now, and no one would mourn its passing.)

On to the new…

The Island abhors a restaurant vacuum, so new places are constantly popping up to replace the old. This season saw at least three new restaurants in Edgartown alone. David Ryan’s was a popular Edgartown hangout that closed after 2011. But do not despair, because 11 North is a worthy successor. From personal experience, I can tell you that their burger is excellent and the fries are superb. (For further fry musings, see my previous post. [add link]) My wife derived tremendous comfort from their comfort food selection of tomato soup and grilled cheese. Word has it that they serve awesome homemade tater tots. Eat your heart out Napoleon Dynamite!

Lucky Hank’s is the (in my opinion regrettable) name of a new place on Upper Main Street. The converted home now serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner all year. The pancakes that I had during a recent breakfast there were among the best I’ve had anywhere. Speaking of ill-chosen names, The Port Hunter occupies the space once home to the shop, “In the Woods”.

One has to wonder, however, whether naming a restaurant after a shipwreck is tempting fate in such a capricious business.

Vineyard Square virtually untouched by Superstorm Sandy.

Amazingly, the hotel’s only impact of Sandy was a few roof shingles. We feel very blessed and our hearts go out to the millions of Americas (including some of our guests) who have lost loved ones or homes in this devastating storm.

Here at The Square we worked to get our guests off the island last Saturday before Sandy bore down. Then we sat and listened to the wind howl and marveled at the photos of the streets by the Oak Bluffs ferry station awash in ocean waves.

For an island used to being battered by the elements, Sandy was quite minor in the scheme of things. The Vineyard was very lucky in this one. As the Martha’s Vineyard Times put it, “Martha’s Vineyard dodged nature’s deadliest fury. Had Sandy deviated from a path that meteorologists acknowledged was unusual — a slow jog parallel to the Eastern Seaboard, followed by a sharp turn west over New Jersey — the effects could have been far more severe.”

Clean up on the island (downed trees, minor damage) has mostly been completed and roads are clear – ferries running fine. We hope you can regroup on your end and plan a getaway to visit us before the full hotel shuts down after Christmas in Edgartown. We are running some truly amazing special deals right now aimed at helping you sneak in a final getaway before the holidays. Check them out and come visit in November or early December!

It’s not too early to book your room for one of Fall’s most fun (if heart-burn inducing!) events. Wingfest is coming on Saturday, December 1, 2012 and tickets are now available.

Come taste competing sauces at Wingfest 2012!

This year all of our Edgartown hotel rooms are open that weekend – at GREAT quiet season rates.

Are you a wing aficionado? Got opinions about what makes a great sauce? This event is for you. Attendees rate sauces from the island’s best. And this year will be quite the contest. Why?

According to event sponsor, Sharky’s Cantina, the Edgartown Fireman’s Association isn’t eligible this year. Last year, the association reached Dynasty status by winning Best Wings three years in a row so that makes them ineligible to win in 2012. It’s anybody’s event to “clean up” by making a mess with a tart and tasty sauce!

Sharky’s issued a throwdown with the following statement: “Will it be the Edgartown Patrolman’s Association who fell just 3 votes short in 2011, is it Oak Bluffs EMS’s turn to earn their wings, or is there someone out there ready to step up and accept the challenge?”

Come fill your belly with competing sauces, see the results and enjoy the live music, contests, and giveaways. Serious fun and awesome food. Read more about wingfest here.
