Hotels in Martha’s Vineyard MA

The view of Martha's Vineyard during a New England spring day. While summer is the perfect season for visiting Edgartown, any time of year is a great time to book your stay at Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. Spring in New England, also known as shoulder season or off-season, is an excellent time of year to visit Martha’s Vineyard. For anyone looking to live like a local, there’s no better time to check out all there is to do and see throughout the region.

Why Visit during the Shoulder Season

If you want to visit Martha’s Vineyard before the summer crowds descend on the charming towns, pack your bags and plan your vacation for the off-season. Starting late fall/early winter and lasting until about May, this time of year allows you a more intimate experience. In addition to escaping the large crowds, there are other perks to visiting our Edgartown hotel during this time. Unlike during the summer, you can easily get your car onto the ferry. While there are several transportation options, we understand sometimes it’s nice to have the flexibility that comes from bringing your own vehicle along with you.

What to Do during Your Visit

As previously stated, one of the biggest perks of visiting during the shoulder season is avoiding the summer crowds. While businesses may shut down during winter, they start coming alive in spring. Just check their hours before visiting, as they may still be operating under shortened hours. There are several things to do during your visit, but here are just three options. For more help deciding what to do, simply talk with our concierge staff.

A lighthouse on Chappaquiddick Island. With its ocean breeze and charming atmosphere, Martha’s Vineyard is the perfect destination when you’re ready for a laidback escape. This New England island is filled with quaint towns, unique attractions, and thrilling adventures. Be close to it all by staying at Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites in Edgartown. Not only will you have a relaxing place to call home, but you’ll also be just minutes away from the ferry that’ll take you over to Chappaquiddick Island.

What to Do Know before Setting Off

The only way to get to the island off Edgartown’s shore is on the Chappy Ferry. The ferry, which was featured in Jaws, runs daily, but the schedule depends on the season, so be sure to check into hours before planning your adventure. Fees will vary based on if you are traveling with a vehicle, bike, or just as a passenger.

There is only one road on the island, and it’s paved until the last mile. Because of this, we recommend exploring the island by bike or foot. Before heading over, pack a picnic lunch and snacks to enjoy as there is not much shopping available on Chappaquiddick, commonly referred to as Chappy.

What to Do on Chappy

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you won’t have any trouble finding things to do during your visit to the island. From hiking to fishing and everything in between, Chappy has it all, including three conservation areas. You will have to pay for admission to the refuges.

Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge

Cape Poge Refuge is the largest of the three conservation areas on the island, measuring more than 500 acres. The barrier beach is made up of a sandy shoreline, salt pond, salt marsh, and red cedars. At the northernmost point sits a lighthouse first built in 1801.

Mytoi

Mixed in with traditional New England beauty is Mytoi, a 14-acre Japanese-style garden. The preserve, which is sheltered by a pine grove, features a small pond and island home to goldfish, frogs, and turtles. Wander around as you take in the native flora and exotic plants.

Wasque

The 200 acres that make up Wasque, pronounced “Way-skwee,” are never the same. Found on the southeastern corner, the coastline is ever-changing due to storms and rising sea levels. Explore sand bars on trails, or bring your binoculars to enjoy a bit of birdwatching.
