Chesca’s, the fabulous restaurant located right here at Vineyard Square, is offering a great deal in honor of Martha’s Vineyard’s Restaurant week. Each dining guest will receive $5 off every course, up to 3 courses (excluding dessert), with the purchase of an entrée.

For example, a guest may order a salad, an appetizer, and an entrée and receive a $15 discount off their bill. A guest ordering an entrée and a appetizer will receive $10 discounted off their bill. This offer is valid today (Sunday) through Thursday June 20.

Don’t miss this opportunity to dine at one of the island’s most popular restaurants – at a discount!

Disclaimer time.  The author, an occasional contributor to this blog, is an uncultured barbarian when it comes to all things cuisine. I wouldn’t know a foie gras from a fra diavolo if my life depended on it.  Hopefully, it never will.

The Vineyard offers many great French Fry spots!

My tastes (to use the term in its broadest sense) run more to the pedestrian, the lowbrow, the mundane.  I’m not necessarily proud of it, but I won’t shirk from my identity.  In Popeye’s words, “I yam what I yam” (though I don’t eat yams either… or spinach).

There are a limited number of food items about which I feel qualified to opine, but one of them is the humble fried potato, a.k.a. French fries, or if I want to put on airs appropriate to the Vineyard, pomme frites.  On a recent visit to the Vineyard, I sampled this delicacy at several different eateries.  I’m pleased to say that, if you want a fine French fry, you’ll find a great selection on the island.  Here are a few of my favorite selections:

Henry’s at the Harborview in Edgartown has fantastic hand cut fries.  (Side note: Why would anyone serve frozen fries?)  They come in three varieties: regular, Maine sea salt and vinegar, and truffle and parmesan.  (That last selection is a little hoity-toity, I realize, but even we Philistines must make accommodations when it comes to a good fry.)  All these choices are delicious, especially when they accompany a good burger, and Henry’s burgers are very good indeed.  (More on burgers in a future post.)

The State Road Restaurant in West Tisbury is another fine restaurant with an impressive menu that is completely lost on my taste buds.  The frites, however, can be enjoyed by lowlife and highlife alike.  These fresh cut beauties are worth savoring on their own, but if you really must have them with your “Pancetta wrapped bluefish” or “wood grilled Menemsha squid”, feel free.  But you’re on your own from my perspective.

I have a particular fondness for one fry that is not remotely French.  The “Bite Fries” at the Bite in Menemsha are bite-(what else?)-sized chunks of baked potatoes fried to a perfect crisp.  They’re an unforgettable accompaniment to the simple but wonderful menu at this humble hideaway at the ocean’s edge.

At the other end of the size spectrum are the shoestring fries.  The Atlantic in Edgartown serves up a huge side of those slender spuds that are impossible to resist.  Another surprising find was Saltwater in Vineyard Haven.  They also have done wonders with shoestring fries.  I had to bring home half of my sandwich because I’d gorged myself on pommes frites.

I’m sure there are plenty more quality fries to sample.  It’s a reporter’s burden to be complete in his research, so I’ll keep pushing ahead with my quest.

If I don’t die of clogged arteries in the meantime.

Martha’s Vineyard Tours: an Insight on Our Life & History

We had busy “full house” Memorial Day Weekend here at Vineyard Square. Thanks to all of you who came to herald summer with us!

June heralds the start of beach weather!

As the next few weeks roll by, temperatures will rise and we’ll see more and more families back at our Martha’s Vineyard hotel as schools let out and vacations begin. Umbrellas begin to dot the sand on the beaches and the streets buzz with shoppers.

June also heralds some of the season’s first outdoor attractions. Walking tours swing into gear as do guided kayak glides with a Felix Neck naturalist. Plus, the Sharks baseball season kicks off on June 9 (woot woot!).

Mid-June welcomes the vastly popular Taste of the Vineyard. In fact, Thursday night’s Gourmet Stroll on June 14 offers the Island’s best food, wine and handcrafted beers from over 75 outstanding fine food and beverage participants. Rooms are almost gone, so stop reading and BOOK NOW!

It promises to be a shining summer here at The Square. We look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks!

Martha’s Vineyard Tours: an Insight on Our Life & History

Class, welcome to MV101.  In this course you will learn the fundamentals of a Martha’s Vineyard vacation.  Pay close attention and take copious notes.  There will be a test upon completion of the course.

Oak Bluffs’ gingerbread houses are a must for any first-time Martha’s Vineyard visitor.

First, it’s important to understand that Martha’s Vineyard is an island.  (Say it with me, “island”.)  You can’t drive to it.  Practical jokes notwithstanding, there is no tunnel or bridge to take you there.  You must arrive by boat or, if you have the wherewithal or are a sitting president, by plane.

When you are hungry, do not – I repeat, do not – go looking for McDonald’s, Applebee’s, Chuck E. Cheese’s, or any other of that ilk.  You won’t find them.  Even if you could locate one of those beasts, it would be in very bad taste (quite literally) to patronize them.  Martha’s Vineyard specializes in real food.  Good food.  Leave the chains where they belong: on the mainland or on your snow tires.

The preferred method of transportation on the Vineyard is the VTA, or Vineyard Transit Authority.  You can get anywhere on the island for a reasonable price, especially if you purchase a multi-day pass.  You can also rent a moped if you want to annoy drivers and immediately identify yourself as el tourista. (Not recommended.  Points will be deducted.)

For a more leisurely pace and healthful experience, bicycles are an excellent alternative.  You can bring your own over on the boat (see “island” above) or rent one at any number of convenient shops.  The bike path system is superb, offering plenty of safe, off-the-road routes to a variety of island destinations.

Speaking of destinations, you will need to take in all of the following sights if you are to have a true neophyte’s MV vacation:

  1. The Flying Horses
  2. The Gingerbread Houses, a.k.a. Methodist Campground, a.k.a. MV Camp Meeting Association
  3. Sunset on Menemsha Beach
  4. South Beach
  5. Gay Head
  6. The Jaws Bridge

[Note: More advanced activities will be explored in detail in the follow-on class to this one: MV102, for which this class is a prerequisite.]

While a day trip is a perfectly acceptable way to get a cursory view of the island, it is strongly recommended that several days be set aside for the complete “MV Experience”©.  (Extra credit – and extra enjoyment – will be granted to those who stay at Vineyard Square Hotel and Suites, sponsors of this session.  No fee has been a paid for this promotional announcement.)

Finally, a long walk is a required project for this class.  The following locations will be accepted as fulfilling this requirement:

  1. Mytoi gardens on Chappaquiddick
  2. Polly Hill Arboretum
  3. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary
  4. Any beach

There are many other possible walking trails, but they are recommended only for our more advanced students.

Now it’s time for your test: Grab a ferry and visit.

Good luck.

Martha’s Vineyard Tours: an Insight on Our Life & History

We are loving all the positive messages from artist and psychotherapist Julia Kidd that are popping up all over the Island!! Who doesn’t need a little more positivity in their day? Ranging from “It is so easy to love you.” to “You are a bright idea,” the messages take the forms of banners (one spans Water street near the hotel), road-side signs, and even projections on movie theater screens.

This public art project leaves the Vineyard on May 7, so make sure you get out and about and see them soon. Kidd has said that the project is intended to make folks feel positive about their lives and inspired.

We spoke to her the other day and she mentioned that Island residents this time of year (gearing up for the season) either feel overwhelmed with work or overwhelmed with the need of work. We couldn’t agree more. Seeing her words of encouragement have brightened up the days of Vineyard Square’s busy staff.

Read more about the project in this MVTimes article.
