Follow the African American Heritage Trail on the Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard is known for being the perfect escape when you need a break from everyday life. However, in addition to being home to relaxing adventures, this popular vacation destination is also home to a vast history. What Is the African American Heritage Trail?

The trail is a collection of bronze-marked historic sites across the Vineyard, with stops in Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Tisbury, West Tisbury, and more. Unlike the name suggests, it is not a single walking path. Each site on the trail has a plaque describing its significance. 

Places to Visit

With more than 30 sites on the trail, we recommend setting aside a full day to explore. This way you can take your time and enjoy little side quests along the way. Some signature sites include:

1. The Nancy Michael plaque and sculpture at Memorial Wharf in Edgartown: Michael was thought to have special powers and was both feared and respected by superstitious sailors.

2. Capt. William A. Martin’s gravesite on Chappaquiddick: Martin overcame 19th-century prejudice to become a respected whaling captain of integrated ships in Edgartown. Do not get this confused with the Martin homestead, which is private property.

3. The Rebecca Amos plaque at Great Rock Bight Preserve in Chilmark: Born in Guinea and enslaved in Chilmark, Amos married a Wampanoag man and died a free woman and landowner on the fields this preserve now protects. 

4. A plaque for the escape of Esther: Found on Memorial Wharf in Edgartown, this site honors Esther, an enslaved woman who escaped in Edgartown Harbor in 1743.

5. The Randall Burton site in Menemsha: Burton escaped enslavement in 1854 and was sheltered by the Wampanoag in Aquinnah before sailing from this harbor toward freedom in Canada. 

While plaques are in public view, some are found on private property. As you explore, be sure to check which ones are on private property so you don’t inadvertently end up trespassing.

You can easily explore the trail on a self-guided adventure. However, if you would like to join a guided tour, you can choose from a variety of outings, including a full island tour.
