With so many places to stock up on dessert (and a little help from the gingerbread-house cottages in Oak Bluffs), Martha’s Vineyard sometimes feels like Candyland, and we’re not complaining. The way we see it, vacation is a chance to treat yourself. Next time you’re on the Island, go ahead and make a stop or two on our sweet tooth tour for the best Martha’s Vineyard ice cream, fudge, and more.

Murdick's Fudge Martha's Vineyard

Murdick’s Fudge — Edgartown

The original Martha’s Vineyard fudge shop features upwards of 15 flavors ranging from classic chocolate to Cape Cod Cranberry. Their pledge to use only the finest natural ingredients makes for top-notch flavor and texture, but that’s not the only reason to stop in. Murdick’s has been making fudge the same way since 1887, and they do it in plain sight. You can bring the whole family to watch workers mix, pour, shape, and slice the next batch.

Mad Martha’s Ice Cream — Edgartown

Our go-to scoop shop is just a few steps away from Murdick’s here on North Water Street, and there’s no law against visiting both on the same walk. Homemade Martha’s Vineyard ice cream and frozen yogurt await behind the counter. In the summer, the shop is also home to Skinny’s Fat Sandwiches. First-time visitors have occasionally been known to confuse the two menus, confounded by the possibility of steak & cheese flavored ice cream. We’ll stick with mint chocolate chip, thanks.

Back Door Donuts — Oak Bluffs

backdoor-donuts-1We understand the skepticism that comes with a claim like “the best donuts you’ve ever had, anywhere, ever,” but we’re going to make it anyway. We’re confident you’ll agree. If you walk around to the lot behind Martha’s Vineyard Gourmet Café & Bakery after 8 p.m., you’ll notice an open door, a sweet bakery aroma, and probably a long line — it’s worth the wait. These Martha’s Vineyard donuts are so light and fluffy that diehards can easily have two or three in a row. We recommend going for the apple fritter on your first visit.

Chilmark Chocolates — Chilmark

A box of Chilmark Chocolates makes a pretty sweet gift, but we won’t tell if you sneak a few for yourself. Head up-Island to Chilmark and choose your assortment of confections. These local favorites make great Martha’s Vineyard wedding favors too.

Val Cakes — Edgartown

Chef Valerie will make cakes of any size here in Edgartown. They’re a go-to for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and other celebrations on the Island. Our favorite treats are a little smaller, though: Val’s French macarons are to die for: fluffy, creamy, and just right for a quick sugar fix.

Don’t forget to save a little room at the end of your sweet tooth tour — the taffy bowl will be waiting when you come back to your room at our Edgartown hotel. If you arrive in the afternoon, you just might score a cookie from our baker, too.

Four decades ago this June, Captain Brody set out with Hooper and Quint to hunt down the infamous great white, and we’re celebrating here on Amity—er—Martha’s Vineyard. The countdown to June 20, when the island classic returns to big screens across the US, has begun. We’re thrilled to see our favorite movie still gaining new fans while we relive memories of its creation here on the Island. Check out these five ways we’re celebrating Jaws’ 40th Anniversary, and if you’re in the same boat, come join the fun!

1. Jaws Screenings at Island Theaters

Jaws is still a visually stunning film in 2015 — we get an extra chill from its gorgeous wide shots of island attractions like South Beach knowing the shark is lurking in nearby waters. Sure, you can watch those scenes on your smartphone, but nothing matches the collective gasp of a group seeing the shark’s first set of leftovers on the big screen.

Martha’s Vineyard movie theaters are helping with the hunt. Entertainment Cinemas here in Edgartown is screening the film every Sunday evening at 6:30 for the month of June., and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is joining the national celebration with Jaws screenings at the Capawock and Strand theaters on June 20.

Jaws Movie Map 2. A Brand-new Jaws Map

If you meet an Islander who was here while Jaws was being filmed, you’re guaranteed a good story. One of our favorites is from a friend who saw a mechanic working on the internal machinery of the model shark on a dock near Oak Bluffs — he’d gone in head first, with just his legs sticking out of the shark’s mouth. Our custom Vineyard Square Jaws Map has all of the original set locations, with many still recognizable today. We’re always happy to help guests plan a tour, too.

3. Local Celebrity Sightings

You never know who might make an appearance here on the Island. We’re keeping our eyes out for Spielberg, Dreyfuss, and company. In the meantime, keep in mind that the crew picked out locals to be extras. Don’t be afraid to strike up a bar conversation with the bearded gentleman at the far end — he just might have been in the movie. Our favorite local celebrity is Lee Fierro, who delivered one of the most memorable slaps in film history as Mrs. Kintner. Lee lives on the Island and has been known to stop in at Vineyard Square and say hi!

Mary Lee Shark Tracking Location4. Shark Fun on Twitter

Shark tracking has come a long way since Quint used used his harpoon gun to tether those yellow barrels. It’s a lot more humane, too — turns out these finned creatures are pretty harmless in real life and they’re an important part of the ocean ecosystem. OCEARCH, a marine research group, has been tagging real live sharks with GPS modules so regular people like us can follow their travels around the Atlantic Ocean and learn about them. Our favorite one? A great white named Mary Lee, who has her own very witty Twitter account.

5. A Custom Jaws 40th Anniversary Package

We decided to make it easier for Vineyard Square guests to get in on the fin frenzy. Visitors who book our Jaws 40th Anniversary Package will get a Jaws poster signed by Lee Fierro, tickets to see the movie at Entertainment Cinemas, and a copy of our Jaws Map. Hope to see you here in Edgarown!

Oh, and one more thing: the beaches on Martha’s Vineyard will be open this July 4th weekend, come hell or high water!

If you ask us, popcorn tastes a little better here on the island. Scenes roll by on big screens almost the same way they did 50 years ago, and each of our four Martha’s Vineyard movie theaters bears unique character and history. Movies aren’t just a cure for the occasional rainy day, either — there’s nothing quite like stepping out of a dark theater into the island twilight and a summer sea breeze. Two of these theaters are making triumphant returns in 2015 after years closed, and two more continue to captivate new visitors daily.

Edgartown Movie Theater - Martha's Vineyard

Entertainment Cinemas — Edgartown

You’ll find our hometown theater right around the corner on Main Street, nestled between storefronts with whitewashed siding. Entertainment Cinemas is open year-round, rotating titles throughout each week to screen a variety of Hollywood hits. Hidden behind its vintage charm is the modern ability to screen 3D movies with Dolby surround sound, and the seats inside are new, too. This Martha’s Vineyard movie theater is the perfect match for dinner and a stroll through Edgartown.

Capawock Theatre — Vineyard Haven

Built in 1913, the Capawock began its first 99 years of operation showing silent movies. Unfortunately, the theater went completely silent in 2012 after struggling to keep up with modern technology. Movie lovers on and off the island couldn’t shake the landmark from their memories, though. During the exceptionally snowy 2014-2015 winter, the newly minted Martha’s Vineyard Theater Foundation came to the rescue with a million-dollar fundraising campaign to refurbish and reopen the Capawock along with the Strand in Oak Bluffs.

Strand Theatre — Oak Bluffs

Like the Capawock, the Strand operated for nearly a century before closing its doors and falling into disrepair. It, too, is on track for a grand reopening for summer 2015. According to the Theater Foundation, these Martha’s Vineyard movie theaters are getting a history-conscious facelift, with new sound and projection systems and more comfortable seating.

We’re especially excited about the concession stands, which are going to offer island-sourced food along with traditional treats. A touch of MV Sea Salt sounds great on popcorn — our breakfast baker has been experimenting with it lately here at Vineyard Square.

Martha’s Vineyard Film Center — Vineyard Haven

After a decade of sustained interest and growth, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society built a state-of-the-art viewing space in Vineyard Haven in 2012. The Marilyn Meyerhoff Theatre has stadium-style seating and is equipped to project the next generation of high-tech media formats. Its main focus is on art films and bringing rare and independent theater experiences to the island. The Film Society also hosts the annual Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival and an array of other events.

Martha’s Vineyard is the home of the original summer blockbuster (Jaws!), so we couldn’t be more thrilled to have four unique movie theaters going strong on the island. Go ahead, grab some popcorn and try them all —  your guest room in downtown Edgartown will be ready and waiting after the final credits have rolled.

When you’re on the island with someone special, the miles of water between you and the rest of the world make it clear: this is your time. You’ve set your emails to auto-reply and you’ve forgotten your phone chargers — on purpose. The stories you’ll tell friends and relatives when you get back can wait. Now’s your chance to write stories you’ll never tell a soul, and some of the best ones start with these hand-picked romantic things to do for couples on Martha’s Vineyard.

Two Chairs on the Beach - Romantic Things to Do on Martha's Vineyard

Sunsets at Menemsha

As day fades into evening, follow the sun west to Menemsha Beach in Chilmark. This public beach faces Vineyard Sound, so the waves are gentler than on the Atlantic side, just right for a late-day dip. It also faces one of the most spectacular sunsets in all of New England for the perfect start to a night on the town. You can even have a fresh lobster dinner on the beach — takeout seafood from the famous Larsen’s Fish Market is just a stroll away.

For the Adventurous Couple: Biplane Rides

Biplane at Katama Airfield Martha's Vineyard If adrenaline is a key ingredient in your relationship, take each other to new heights with an open-air plane ride over the Vineyard from Biplane MV. The vintage aircraft take off from Katama Airfield right here in Edgartown and tours can soar over different combinations of beaches and towns. It’s not the least-expensive Martha’s Vineyard couples’ activity, with rides for two starting at a few hundred dollars, but the views are priceless. For a few extra dollars, you can up the intensity and have your pilot throw in some loops, rolls, and dives. Even if you’re not up for flying, the airfield is worth a visit to watch classic planes take off and land on its grass runways just like they did when it opened in 1924.

Romantic Restaurants

Fair warning: your usual date night spot back home might lose a little magic after a romantic dinner on Martha’s Vineyard. In addition to the freshest possible seafood, island chefs have access to a surprising amount of other local produce, from berries to organic beef. Top that off with stunning natural surroundings and you’ll find yourself lingering after dessert.

For the ultimate romantic experience, check out chef Michael Brisson’s prix-fixe tasting menu at l’étoile here in Edgartown. His French-influenced contemporary cuisine has garnered near-perfect ratings from Zagat and impressed the who’s who of culinary experts at a Relais & Chateaux Chef’s Dinner. Here at The Square, Chesca’s offers the island’s finest Italian fare. Our favorite tables for couples are on the porch.

Go for a Nighttime Stroll

Not everything needs to be planned. After dinner and a drink, go for a walk around the edges of Edgartown and let the finer points of your itinerary figure themselves in the moment. Leave your shoes just off the edge of North Water Street and tiptoe onto the beach around Edgartown Lighthouse at dusk. Wherever the evening takes you, don’t forget to look up. The stargazing on Martha’s Vineyard is truly unbelievable since we’re so far from any major sources of light pollution.

Wherever your romantic island adventure takes you, Vineyard Square will be waiting for you at the center of it all. Unwind with a glass of wine overlooking the harbor from our top-floor deck or retreat to the quiet of your room after a night out. Whatever your needs, we’re here to help make your romantic getaway on Martha’s Vineyard more memorable.

Martha's Vineyard Morning - Breakfast

Dock Street Coffee Shop

Find this time-tested Edgartown breakfast favorite hiding under a simple red-and-white awning emblazoned with the word DINER. Dock Street Coffee Shop’s menu offers much more than the name suggests — its galley kitchen, right behind the 18-seat counter, is capable of whipping up an impressive array of morning favorites in minutes. The fast, expert service is one reason not to fear the line on a crowded morning. The other, of course, is that fresh food of this caliber is worth the wait.

Espresso Love

Marthas Vineyard Breakfast - Espresso Love Edgartown has been loving Espresso Love since 1992. Since then, the bakery has expanded its menu from hot drinks and pastries more toward full-service, with tasty soups and sandwiches available for lunch, too. Attentive baristas make this a great Martha’s Vineyard breakfast stop if you’re in a hurry, and it’s easy to grab a couple of treats for the road.

Black Dog Bakery and Café

One of the most recognized Martha’s Vineyard attractions, the Black Dog is famous for a reason. Along with iconic t-shirts, this Vineyard Haven establishment has fine baked goods and artisanal coffee blends. Its location makes it the perfect bookend for your Martha’s Vineyard vacation — stop in for a sandwich on fresh, homemade bread when you arrive on the ferry or get a cup of joe to go as you begin your journey home. For a sit-down meal, walk just around the side to the Tavern.

The Breakfast Nook at Vineyard Square

From May1 through October 31, stroll downstairs to our breakfast nook and enjoy a tasty Edgartown breakfast included with every stay at Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. Here, guests need not compete with the rest of the island for a nutritious morning meal and our Edgartown hotel staff makes a point of presenting a variety of fruit, yogurt, muffins, cereals, juices, coffee, and teas that put the traditional hotel continental breakfast to shame. We’ve expanded and upgraded the space for the 2015 season, with the ability to offer more hot food options and an improved seating area. In the warm weather, you can enjoy breakfast out on the patio as well.

You can’t go wrong at any of these four Martha’s Vineyard breakfast staples — just wake up, smell the coffee, and let your hosts do the rest. Let us know your favorite place to eat breakfast in Edgartown in the comments below or via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. In the meantime, all this thinking about breakfast has us hungry for some scrambled eggs and linguica (the island’s favorite sausage, of Portuguese descent).
