7 Things to Do on a Rainy Day

Just as Martha’s Vineyard offers endless natural beauty to explore, it also offers countless indoor activities. With so many things to choose from, a little bit of bad weather is nothing more than a speed bump on your way to having an adventure-filled day.

1. Spend time wandering around the Featherstone Center for the Arts. Located in Oak Bluffs, this community arts center features exhibits of local artwork and offers weekly events and classes.

2. Learn about local history at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, which began collecting items in 1922. Since then, the collection has grown to include pre-revolutionary war artifacts and exhibits filled with modern art pieces.

3. If the weather isn’t too gloomy, enjoy wandering in and out of local shops. Grab a new book or two at Edgartown Books, or visit The Great Put On, which has been an Edgartown staple for more than five decades.

4. Enjoy a quintessential rainy day activity by watching a movie at Edgartown Cinema. If you’re looking for something a little less mainstream, see what the MV Film Society is playing at its film center.

5. Check out The Barn Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs. This Martha’s Vineyard spot is a little bit of everything. Enjoy a delicious meal before or after playing a couple of games of bowling. You need to reserve your lane online ahead of time.

6. Fight off the chill at a local coffee shop. Espresso Love, conveniently located near our Edgartown hotel, offers cafe classics like lattes and cappuccinos. Customize your caffeine with one of their syrup options, such as English toffee or hazelnut.

7. Put your puzzle-solving skills to the test at Pirate’s Puzzle Escape Room. You and your team will have to work together to solve clues and escape in time. Reservations can be made online.

The outside of a New England building rumored to haunted in Martha's Vineyard.

When you think of Martha’s Vineyard, you probably imagine incredible seafood, stunning views, and endless charm. While all of this is certainly true, the New England island has a bit of a haunted past. If you’re planning a fall getaway to Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites, leave some room in your itinerary to discover some of Martha’s Vineyard’s mysterious and spooky buildings and history.

5 Places to Discover Martha’s Vineyard’s Haunted Past

According to local legend, several places in Martha’s Vineyard are known for their haunting presence and supernatural events. While we can’t confirm whether these legends are true, reading about them is a fun way to embrace Spooky Season.

1. The Vineyard Gazette Building dates back to the 1760s. Before it houses the newspaper, it was where less fortunate families lived. Those who work in the building report unexplainable happenings like coffee mugs moving.

2. Another location in Edgartown is the Vincent House, which is the oldest residence on Martha’s Vineyard. There have been reports of doors slamming and apparitions of a woman.

3. Also in Edgartown is the former Daggett House Inn. Now a private residence, it was the first tavern to sell beer and ale on the island. Supposedly, two brothers and their dog haunt the grounds.

4. Built in 1891, the Corbin-Norton House in Oak Bluffs has burned down twice. One ghost hunter says spirits caused the fires.

5. Venture to Aquinnah, and you’ll discover the Vanderhoop Homestead, often considered the most haunted house on Martha’s Vineyard. There is some disagreement about this spot, now the Aquinnah Cultural Center. Spirit hunters say they have heard a little girl screaming at night, while former residents report they’ve never heard her.
