Where to See Breathtaking Nature on Your Massachusetts Getaway

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank was created in response to the population growth and the development that came with that. This cause focuses on preserving land and everything that makes Martha’s Vineyard special. Some of these protected areas are only a short bike ride away from our Edgartown hotel.

  • Felix Neck Preserve has served as a premier environmental education center for years. The 25-acre space is excellent for hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and more.
  • Park on the right at Edgartown’s Jernegan’s Pond to visit Sweetened Water. The 11.4-acre preserve was once land used as a dairy farm. Today it’s a spot to go bicycling, cross-country skiing, or hiking with your dog.
  • At over 25 acres, there is plenty of nature to take in at Ben Toms. You can access this preserve by walking up the bicycle path that connects the area to the Sweetened Water Preserve. Enjoy nature studying, horseback riding, and more.

Other incredible spots are only a short ferry ride away on Chappaquiddick Island to explore other trust properties. To visit Tom’s Neck Preserve, park near the Mytoi garden and follow the signs. Some of the activities you can partake in include taking in scenic views, hunting, bicycling, and picnicking.

Two women on a bus, one of the many transportation options on Martha's Vineyard.Once a major whaling port in the 1800s, Edgartown is now a charming spot perfect for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Located in the heart of this Martha’s Vineyard town is Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. Thanks to its convenient location, our boutique hotel makes the perfect home base for any getaway. Being close to top activities and attractions means you can utilize the various transportation methods on Martha’s Vineyard.

How to Get Around on Martha’s Vineyard

If you’re traveling to Martha’s Vineyard from the mainland with your car, you’ll need to make a reservation with the Steamship Authority, and be sure to do this well in advance to ensure a spot. We recommend leaving your car in the Steamship Authority lot in Falmouth, which allows you to purchase a ticket without a reservation. Other ferries leaving from Massachusetts towns include the Hy-Line from Hyannis and the Falmouth-Edgartown ferry, both of which are passenger-only seasonal ferries.

There are also several other ferry options originating outside of the Cape Cod area.

Both the Rhode Island and New York ferries are seasonal, so be sure to check the dates of operation when planning your getaway. Once you arrive at our Edgartown hotel, you have plenty of options for getting around.

Public Transportation

One of the best transportation options is the Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority. This year-round public bus and paratransit service has routes that connect you to every town. The frequency of services can vary with the season, so look times up ahead of time. For added convenience, you can purchase passes for one day, three days, seven days, and longer on your smartphone.

Bikes

For a more scenic way of getting around, check out a rental bike. We offer complimentary bike rentals but only have so many. Visit Edgartown Bicycles or Wheel Happy Bike Shops if all our rentals are being used. Martha’s Vineyard is known for being bike-friendly, so there are plenty of designated bike paths throughout the island.

Other Options

While not encouraged for novice riders, moped rentals are a good option for those who have ridden them before. There are also taxis if you’re in a hurry, and our concierge staff can help you set a ride up. You can also go for a tour on a bus or van that’ll show you the sights but leave the driving up to someone else.
