Vineyard Square virtually untouched by Superstorm Sandy.

Amazingly, the hotel’s only impact of Sandy was a few roof shingles. We feel very blessed and our hearts go out to the millions of Americas (including some of our guests) who have lost loved ones or homes in this devastating storm.

Here at The Square we worked to get our guests off the island last Saturday before Sandy bore down. Then we sat and listened to the wind howl and marveled at the photos of the streets by the Oak Bluffs ferry station awash in ocean waves.

For an island used to being battered by the elements, Sandy was quite minor in the scheme of things. The Vineyard was very lucky in this one. As the Martha’s Vineyard Times put it, “Martha’s Vineyard dodged nature’s deadliest fury. Had Sandy deviated from a path that meteorologists acknowledged was unusual — a slow jog parallel to the Eastern Seaboard, followed by a sharp turn west over New Jersey — the effects could have been far more severe.”

Clean up on the island (downed trees, minor damage) has mostly been completed and roads are clear – ferries running fine. We hope you can regroup on your end and plan a getaway to visit us before the full hotel shuts down after Christmas in Edgartown. We are running some truly amazing special deals right now aimed at helping you sneak in a final getaway before the holidays. Check them out and come visit in November or early December!
