Active Pursuits

Biking, Hiking and Other Active Martha’s Vineyard Activities

If you like to go, go, go, Martha’s Vineyard offers plenty of vigorous pursuits. The ideas below just scratch the surface. Be sure to stop by our concierge or front desks for more tips and maps customized for your needs.

  • Bike. The Vineyard offers miles and miles of bike trails all over the Island. Rent a bike (there are 2 great rentals within a block of our Edgartown hotel). It’s 5-1/2 miles round trip to South Beach, about 14 round trip to Oak Bluffs – both are beautiful rides.
  • Frisbee Golf. If you’ve tried it, you’ll know how much fun this sport can be! If you’d like to give it a shot, stop by The Lazy Frog on Circuit Ave in Oak Bluffs and pick up a disc or 2 and head to the course in the State Forest. Willing veterans will help you out and give you tips.
  • Golf. Martha’s Vineyard offers 2 public golf courses. Mink Meadows has just 9 holes (but you can always go ‘round twice), Felix Neck Golf Course is one of the most scenic courses in the country (Okay, we might be a little biased). This 18-hole course has long been a presidential favorite! Ask us about setting up tee times.
  • Hike. Martha’s Vineyard has no shortage of stunning places to walk and hike. The Trustees of Reservations, the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank, Sheriffs Meadow, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary – we’ll point them out (along with a few of our special favorites).
  • Kayak. We have a soft spot for guided nature kayak tours by the Trustees. Or, paddle Sengekontacket Pond and watch the kite boarders (see below). Options abound – rent at a singular location, or rent by the day, strap the boats to your car and drop in wherever you fancy.
  • Kiteboarding. Get adventurous and take lessons on Sengekontacket Pond from Skyhigh Kiteboarding. Or, just stand back and watch the experts catch some serious air.
  • Walk/Jog. A 3-mile loop around the downtown area lets you take in the gardens and beautiful whaling captains homes. Five miles takes you around the South Beach loop, A 10mile route sends you to the 2nd bridge on Beach Road and back – enjoying the sites as you go.
  • Workout. Enjoy our air-conditioned fitness center for a quick workout, or join our friend Nisa Mars Counter for one of her famous bootcamps or classes (she was featured in Oprah magazine – need we say more?)
  • Yoga. Ask about the many and varied options for yoga on Martha’s Vineyard. Island yogis offer classes at all times of the day. One of our favorites is yoga on the beach at Inkwell in summer – ask us for the current schedules.
