Archives for March 2015

We’ve heard our fair share of stories from brides who had been dreaming of a Martha’s Vineyard wedding long before they even met their husbands. As the world around us changes, the island remains a constant in family vacation traditions, its natural surroundings lending themselves well to life’s most memorable milestones. Whether you’ve imagined tying the knot here since childhood or you’re just starting to think about a Martha’s Vineyard wedding, these five favorite venues each offer a storybook setting for your special day.

Martha's VIneyard Wedding Venue - Old Whaling Church

Old Whaling Church & Dr. Daniel Fisher House – Edgartown

Located right on Main Street, Old Whaling Church takes transportation out of the planning process — it’s a convenient walk from some of the best Edgartown lodging options. The building’s Greek Revival architecture dates back to 1843, when it was established as a house of worship for whaling crews based on the island. Simple white paint and geometric shapes inside and out create a blank canvas for a ceremony as formal or whimsical as you like.

The church shares a lawn with the Dr. Daniel Fisher house, whose beautiful indoor galleries are a great choice for an intimate reception. The terrace and lawn outdoors can be configured in a variety of arrangements, with upscale local tent rentals available to match your style.

Sailing Camp Park Sunset Sailing Camp Park – Oak Bluffs

With a perfect combination of indoor and outdoor options, Sailing Camp Park overlooks Lagoon Pond and Vineyard Haven Harbor from atop a bluff. Most couples plan their ceremonies for the waterside edge of the lawn, with the fieldstone fireplace inside as an all-weather backup. The full industrial kitchen is well equipped for catering operations, and wall-to-wall hardwood floors allow all kinds of seating and dancing arrangements under the timber vaulted ceiling.

Allen Farm – Chilmark

This gorgeous stretch of land on the island’s southwest coast is a part-time Vineyard wedding venue and a full-time working family farm. It’s popular with couples interested in sourcing local food, and the views of Chilmark Pond and the Atlantic Ocean are unparalleled. Simple ceremonies down by the pond leave the decorating to Mother Nature, with space for large receptions available up the hill.

The Agricultural Hall – West Tisbury

The “New Ag Hall” is actually a century-old post-and-beam barn that was rebuilt in West Tisbury in 1993. Its rustic charm lets the natural surroundings and the soul of your party shine through, and it can accommodate over 300 people for a seated dinner. This Martha’s Vineyard wedding venue is extremely popular and only hosts a limited number of events, so we recommend planning exceptionally far in advance.

Edgartown Lighthouse – Edgartown

Simple, white, and postcard-ready, the Edgartown Lighthouse makes a historic backdrop for a timeless wedding. Beach sand and sea grass surround the beacon, fading into the water just steps away. Wedding parties can reserve the lighthouse itself, though the beach is public and can’t be closed off for private functions.

Martha’s Vineyard weddings can range in size from a few people to a few thousand, and from simple to unbelievably extravagant. Go ahead and let your imagination run wild — chances are, there’s a way to make your dream wedding come true on the island. All of the venues are within easy driving distance of each other, so you can visit as many as you like in one planning trip. That convenience extends to the big day itself, too — guests will love the central location of our Edgartown hotel.

Martha's Vineyard Morning - Breakfast

Dock Street Coffee Shop

Find this time-tested Edgartown breakfast favorite hiding under a simple red-and-white awning emblazoned with the word DINER. Dock Street Coffee Shop’s menu offers much more than the name suggests — its galley kitchen, right behind the 18-seat counter, is capable of whipping up an impressive array of morning favorites in minutes. The fast, expert service is one reason not to fear the line on a crowded morning. The other, of course, is that fresh food of this caliber is worth the wait.

Espresso Love

Marthas Vineyard Breakfast - Espresso Love Edgartown has been loving Espresso Love since 1992. Since then, the bakery has expanded its menu from hot drinks and pastries more toward full-service, with tasty soups and sandwiches available for lunch, too. Attentive baristas make this a great Martha’s Vineyard breakfast stop if you’re in a hurry, and it’s easy to grab a couple of treats for the road.

Black Dog Bakery and Café

One of the most recognized Martha’s Vineyard attractions, the Black Dog is famous for a reason. Along with iconic t-shirts, this Vineyard Haven establishment has fine baked goods and artisanal coffee blends. Its location makes it the perfect bookend for your Martha’s Vineyard vacation — stop in for a sandwich on fresh, homemade bread when you arrive on the ferry or get a cup of joe to go as you begin your journey home. For a sit-down meal, walk just around the side to the Tavern.

The Breakfast Nook at Vineyard Square

From May1 through October 31, stroll downstairs to our breakfast nook and enjoy a tasty Edgartown breakfast included with every stay at Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. Here, guests need not compete with the rest of the island for a nutritious morning meal and our Edgartown hotel staff makes a point of presenting a variety of fruit, yogurt, muffins, cereals, juices, coffee, and teas that put the traditional hotel continental breakfast to shame. We’ve expanded and upgraded the space for the 2015 season, with the ability to offer more hot food options and an improved seating area. In the warm weather, you can enjoy breakfast out on the patio as well.

You can’t go wrong at any of these four Martha’s Vineyard breakfast staples — just wake up, smell the coffee, and let your hosts do the rest. Let us know your favorite place to eat breakfast in Edgartown in the comments below or via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. In the meantime, all this thinking about breakfast has us hungry for some scrambled eggs and linguica (the island’s favorite sausage, of Portuguese descent).

When you ask any of us at Vineyard Square what sets us apart, the unanimous answer is, “our staff.” We believe the people at Vineyard Square are some of the best on the island, offering our guests the sort of warm welcome and thoughtful service that will be well-remembered for a long time after your ferry leaves.

We are pleased to introduce Wesley Sullivan-Doyle as the new general manager of Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites. Wes is not exactly a new face; he has been with us for the past three years with an enthusiastic hello and a knack for making a stay at Vineyard Square a special one. Wes’s commitment to stellar service is obvious, and one that he shares with our entire staff.

To help you get to know Wes, we put him in the hot seat for an edition of the Vineyard Square Staff Six.

Here’s Wesley Sullivan-Doyle, General Manager.

Wes, general manager of Vineyard Square

1. Give us your one-minute memoir, including how you came to Vineyard Square.

I was born and raised in Rhode Island, which means I love coffee milk. I have been on the Vineyard since 2012 after a stylist at the Sea Spa Salon lured me here. I was working for Starwood Hotels at an airport property and was in desperate need of a change of pace. I was supposed to stay for the summer, but I never left.

2. What was your best moment at Vineyard Square (so far)?

That’s a tough question. Each check-in gives me the chance to make other people’s vacations awesome, so the best moments come every day. Working with The Dream Foundation, for terminally ill adults, led to one of my top “best” moments.

3. What word describes you best?

Problem-solver. I work well under pressure.

4. Do you have any hidden (or not-so-hidden) talents?

I managed an independent record label based in Boston before moving to the island. I was in charge of securing new talent and overseeing the recording process for artists. An artist I worked with made it onto the Billboard Top 100 this past year, so I think that I know how to spot a good thing when I see it.

5. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

I would love the ability to talk to animals because I think they would have an amusing take on life. Not that I don’t already talk to animals.

6. What are your favorite things to do/see/eat on Martha’s Vineyard?

Pack the Jeep, deflate the tires, drive onto Norton Point and cook dinner on the beach. There is no better reminder that I live on an island.
