More than a century (112 years to be exact!), after it first opened as a music venue in Oak Bluffs, the Dreamland ballroom reopened a few weeks ago to great fanfare.

Dreamland back in the day!

Located above Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company on Oak Bluffs Avenue across from the Flying Horses Carousel, the space offers music shows, comedy and specialty acts. It’s a great “new again” addition to the nightlife scene here on the island.

The revamped ballroom will be one of the venues for this month’s Jazz festival, as well as exciting acts throughout the summer. The venue features a new paint job, new dance floor and lots of great new vibes. Co-owner J.B. Blau says even more improvements are underway, such as a VIP lounge at the front of the hall.

Check out the Dreamland Facebook page for more information and a calendar of events.

It isn’t REALLY summer until a local theatre troupe rolls out Shakespeare in the warm evening air, is it? This year, the Vineyard Playhouse is presenting two classics, Romeo & Juliet, and, (a personal fav of our marketing director), Twelfth Night.

Productions of The Bard’s plays Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night run through August 18 on the Vineyard.

If you enjoy Elizabethan prose and men in tights, these plays by the Bard are just the thing for warm summer nights under the stars on Martha’s Vineyard.

Enjoy these two master works by William Shakespeare from July 25 through August 18 Wednesdays  – Saturdays at 5 pm at the Tisbury Amphitheater in Vineyard Haven.

We’ll supply you with a Vineyard Square lawn chair and, if you like, hook you up with a picnic. Just ask at the front desk for help.

General admission for adults: $20; 18 and under $10. Mobile box office : 508-687-2452. If you are in the mood for comedy, Twelfth Night is running: July 26,28 & Aug 1, 3, 9, 11, 15 & 17.  Tragedy lovers can catch Romeo & Juliet: July 25, 27 & August 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 & 18.

Our Edgartown hotel staff is thrilled that – beginning a week from today – Improv for Kids (IMP) will be joining us for a series of short performances on the Square. Every other Tuesday through August 28, this talented young troupe will tap into their funny bones and coax laughter from adults and kids alike.

IMP will perform at Vineyard Square all summer

From original musicals to short form improv shows, the IMP troupe provides quality entertainment for the whole family.  Don’t be fooled by their ages, these entertainers deliver amazing performances! Longer shows are held all over the island throughout the summer.

IMP provides quality theater education and performance opportunities to theater artists ages 6-21. Through their innovative improv troupes, after school classes, in school programs, summer camp and original musicals, their focus is on creating artists through the creation of art.

Join us nest Tuesday, July 17 at 7:00 pm for the first “On the Square” performance of this great group of young artists!

The latest Eisenhauer Gallery sculpture to grace our front Square is a striking new work by David Phelps. Titled “Pastural Dreamer” (although we affectionately call him “The Big Guy”), the piece is in two parts spanning 15 x 43 x 24.

“Pastural Dreamer” by David Phelps – currently at Vineyard Square!

The general theme embodied in Phelps’ figurative sculpture (in his own words) is a sense of perseverance, optimism, and humor being embraced in the face of adversity.

This guy sure looks like he is facing life with plenty of optimism! Stop by The Square to check him out. Please inquire at Eisenhauer Gallery as to price and delivery information if you are interested in having the Big Guy grace your home or garden.

Note: this sculpture soaks up the sun and becomes very hot, so please enjoy him from a distance!

If you’ve never seen (or, more importantly, heard) Vineyard Sound around the island, now is the year to come and scope them out. This preppy group of golden-voiced young men looks like a vineyard vines ad that’s come alive to belt out a tune!

Celebrating its 20th year, this all-male acapella singing group croons on street corners, performs in restaurants, and holds concerts from Edgartown to Aquinnah. They have become an annual fixture of summer entertainment on the island and are truly not to be missed during your summer visit. They’ve scheduled a number of official dates in Edgartown (check their schedule here), but make sure you are on the lookout for their “pop-up” shows. They may even appear on The Square!
